DRIVER & RELATED FILES DOWNLOAD

Microsoft Windows:

NOTE: This driver download consists of a compressed set of files (zipped) that are supplied on mini cd with cables. You can first download this decompresssion tool and run on Windows if you do not have a decompression tool (unzip) installed. After downloading the selected driver below right click on the said driver file to extract to a folder on your PC (say...GPS).  Please read the extracted SETUP/HELP file to setup the driver.

DRIVER A    For Garmin eTrex/Geko GPS (and U232 short Converter)

DRIVER B  For Garmin 4 pin round plug GPS (and DB9M short Adaptor Converter)

Linux:  Goto Prolific site:  Redhat Only (Ubuntu HH Distro has the driver pre-installed or on OS updates, so have other variants)

Apple Mac:  Goto Prolific site:  for Mac OS 10.1 thru 10.4 and Mac OS X 10.5 and above (PowerPC and Intel based)...dmg file v.2.1r2

We are not Mac Users. However, Mac Users should review the GPSBabel application or LoadMyTracks. We have found that shareware for Mac appears to be unreliable as regards data transfer. If you are not fairly familiar with the Mac OS command language and accessing the Terminal to issue commands please find someone who is or don't attempt to use the GPS with a Mac. If you fail to configure your Mac with the driver supplied with your GPS application you should test the cable on a Windows machine using EasyGPS

NEWS:
Mac Users should note that Garmin Communicator software may not work on Mac systems.
Recent issues (>2008) of Garmin GPS software may no longer support any serial devices

GUIDANCE SECTION: (for problems other than basic setup procedure)

If you had already loaded a driver that failed please uninstall before loading any driver below. DO NOT load a driver on a PC/Laptop with a GPS switched on and connected, because this may cause other devices to load e.g. Serial and/or Ballpoint device. If you notice these you must Disable them in Device Manager. An unstable Desktop mouse pointer is a likely outcome if not disabled.

How to get data from a Geko 201  .....and other Garmin GPS. This is a very good instruction set for Linux amd MS Windows. Ubuntu HH no problem!

DO NOT load a driver with the cable connected to a PC and with a GPS switched on and connected to the cable. This may cause other devices to load (serial and ballpoint device) and you must Disable them in Device Manager. Unstable Desktop mouse pointer is an outcome if not disabled.

Setting up a COM (Serial) Port on a PC/Laptop

Using a USB to Serial Port Converter cable requires the use of a software driver to mount a COM Port on the computer USB input/output system. The COM Port mounted is a direct replacement for the earlier RS232C ports and operates with the same characteristics (not fast). The driver is supplied on mini CD and when run on the computer will set a COM port number (e.g COM 4) which is an available/free port number. For example, if you have COM ports used by other devices up to COM 8, this driver will assign COM 9 for use. For Windows PCs this number can be identified in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and view Ports (COM & LPT). A Prolific or MCT USB Converter will be observed as Serial on USB Port (Com x), where x is a number. This number must be entered into your GPS application software GPS settings. Also, the GPS and map application should be set to NMEA or Garmin, which are data transfer types. Both must be the same, otherwise data transfer will not function. Our CD has more detailed documents regarding driver setup and possible problems arising.

Manually changing a COM Port number.

Some users may find that the COM Port has setup on COM 11 or a higher number. As mentioned above the Converter driver will setup on the next unused COM port...which could be a double digit number. Setting a number above COM 10 will not be recognised by some map applications which is a weakness of the map application design, or that its an older version. If you do use other devices that use COM ports, say a Bluetooth mobile phone (Nokia) or PDA, the related device drivers can be removed, enabling COM ports to become free. Save your data first! This action may need the Converter COM Port manually (forced) to a non double digit number (say 5 or 6) if on driver removal and computer reboot the Converter has not re-allocated below COM 11. Check in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/ Ports( COM & LPT) with the Converter plugged in, and see if the COM Port has re-located. If it has not then right click on: Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port and select Properties. Click Port Settings/Advanced and you will see a COM Port Number box. Click the dropdown and select a COM Port that is not marked (in use). Click OK to leave the screens. This may cause Windows to show an error message that the COM Port you have selected is in use. If you know its not being used then ignore the message and continue. Follow on screen messages and check Device Manager again for a single digit COM port number...apply to map application.

The problem above is related to some software applications (like Nokia) holding the COM port active when not used. This is called Port Hogging!
