HP iPaq Info

Setup Guidance.

Unfortunately map software does not auto detect the settings required for the iPaq to function with a GPS. Manual settings are required.

Only iPaqs that have a physical COM Port known as COM 1 will operate with our iPaq cables. Most iPaqs do have such a COM 1 Port but if in doubt check with HP. (the iPaq 1900 series do not have a COM Port)

Download the map application to the iPaq using a PC/Laptop with the iPaq connected via its cradle. The following settings are required for TOMTOM software but are common to other map software.

The iPaq is able to communicate with a GPS under the following (usual) settings. Connect the iPaq and GPS with the cable and run the map application on the iPaq.

On the iPaq:

Find the GPS settings/status page and select Serial cable on COM1 from (normally) a drop down list. Also select the data transfer type - commonly NMEA 0183v2 4800.

On the GPS:

Open the interface settings page and select NMEA.

If this does not work it means that the data transfer type is incorrect or (at worse) no COM 1 Port exists. Usually the data transfer type is wrong and that is specific to your map application. Check your map documentation for that requirement.

If settings are correct and the GPS is connected and receiving GPS signals you may be able to see a GPS signal bar chart on the iPaq GPS settings page. Or that the map is tracking your current position.
